Awhile back I was asked to put together an animated music video for this really amazing musician who goes by the name: Gifted and Blessed. I wasn't able to complete the project, and what I have to share is only 35 sec and roughly put together. mmm... ok here goes!

Nebula was a very beautiful and special kitty, she will be greatly missed. Losing a friend is no fun, although I know it's because she brought joy in our lives that we miss her so. She was a blessing and also a teacher, she taught me patience and also how to not sweat the little things, like the material stuff ( cause she loved tearing up everything) Thank you Nebula for the time we shared, I am a better person for it.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

Like many of you out there, I LOVE children's books! Perhaps like myself, you may gravitate towards classic children's stories from a time long ago. You might also agree that some of the children's literature of today lack a certain kind of magic. As I'm beginning in my path as an illustrator, I can only hope to create work that inspries, makes a positive impact, and is magic!

Thank goodness for Mac Barnett, a very charming guy who writes very charming children's stories. Mac is the brains behind this manifesto. He was able to put into words what so many who create & love children's books have been feeling. The stunning art and hand written lettering for the proclamation was beautifully done by Carson Ellis. I still think of myself as an aspiring children's book illustrator, so to be mentioned in the same sentence, let alone as a signatory for this proclamation, with all these artist that I admire was pretty unreal. Thank you universe for being so friendly, kind and keeping things magical.

Every now and then a project comes along that is an honor to be apart of. So much so that you'd probably work on it for free if they hadn't already offered to pay. Queer, a guide for LGBT teens, was that sort of assignment for me. Last year there were so many tragic stories of LGBT teens being bullied & harassed to the point of suicide. It's deeply saddening, but as an amazing group of compassionate people suggested "It Gets Better". My hope is that this book will help show LGBT teens that it does get better and remind them that they're not alone, and that they matter, and that they are beautiful just as they are! My Gaga ( great grand mother ) turned 100 this month. How amazing is that! It's just unfathomable. So to help me grasp what it could mean to reach 100, I created this timeline with a few major historic events that Gaga lived through. Bertha Vaughn Brown was born Dec 24, 1910 in Greensboro Kentucky. She has lived during the times of: The sinking of the Titanic, End of WW1, Womens Liberation Movement, Stock Exchange Crash & the Great Depression.
She was around when a dozen eggs cost 12 cents, the start of WW2, the day Nuclear weaponry was dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki. She was there during the Civil Rights Movement, 1st man on the moon, the end of the Vietnam War, Here During 9/11 and around to see America elect it's 1st African American President.

I mean, it's pretty busy time of the year, people running around shopping, work usually gets more hectic, traveling arrangements... Just made sense to share something to help folks chill. It was also an opportunity for me to sharpen up my label making and Packaging skills. If your are into bath salts & body pampering stuff I highly recommend trying making it yourself, it's crazy easy!

It would seem the U.S. Army is becoming more inclusive and more accurately portraying the diverse country it protects. Recently U.S. citizens of the Sikh religion were permitted to serve while still maintaining their articles of faith. DADT is currently still being enforced but according to national polls majorities of American voters think gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve openly in the military and that the "don't ask, don't tell" policy constitutes discrimination.

Oh, hi again :O) This is a piece I made for an art auction that's goal is to raise money to build homes for children in Ghana. The theme I was encouraged to work in was HOME. I have to admit I spent a lot of time thinking about the meaning of home. I think home is something we carry with us, it isn't any place necessarily. I find home in people and relationships, it's also like a feeling of peace and belonging.

Ok, so I decided to create this scene of me as a child and my grandmother riding a bus. I grew up in Los Angeles where my older brother and I were raised by our Grandmother. Nana ( my grandma ) didn't drive, I remember spending a lot of time on the bus growing up. i don't find comfort in riding a bus, but in this case being with my grandmother who was and has always been there for me. Thank you Nana.

I created this short claymation as an example for workshop.

This is what came out of the workshop. I worked with each kid individually for about 5 min, I asked them to create whatever they wanted to animate, most made dinosaur characters. I had 3 amazing assistance to help me with workshop. Extra special thanks to Eimhin McNamara, who was a huge help with workshops as well as an amazing host/ escort during my time in Dublin.

I was invited to screen my animation Dinosaur Song at The Irish Film Institute. While there i also instructed a few animation workshops with kids. Life is good :O)

After viewing many beautiful reference images of different parts of India, I'm determined to travel there at some point in my life. This is my Latest assignment for Junk Art class. Don't worry I'm not an Alcoholic, that's not my collection of wine bottle corks. I go to this amazing store in Oakland that collects all sorts of Junk and sells it for almost nothing. I think this was a hit with my students, they really got into it and took it in directions i didn't even think about.

I met my hero Yuri Norstein. I went to a screening of his past works and latest unfinished animation Overcoat. Yuri is doing a tour in the states trying to raise money to finish up his film. I want to be like him when i grow up, I think his work is the most beautiful man made thing i know! He doesn't speak english and i don't speak Russian, so i couldn't tell him how much of an inspiration his work has been for me. My signed print of concept art from his animation The Fox and the Hare is my new most treasured thing.

This is a short animation i made while at Cal Arts for the Sesame St Workshop. I have to give thanks to Arlene Sherman, a producer at Sesame St who gave me this amazing opportunity. Sadly Mrs. Sherman passed away around the time of the completion of the project. I never received any word of what would become of it. The whole situation makes me sad, i guess that's why it's taken me until now to post about it. I hope 2009 was good to you folks out there, and who's with me that 2010 will be even better : )

I'm really really happy to have an art exhibit at Urban Outfitters in Downtown San Francisco. It took a month of sawing, sanding and painting to put together this winter themed display. Working with wood was new and challenging for me, but also an exciting and different medium to play with. There are 10 animal designs, 2 of each so 20 pieces in total. If anyone is interested in purchasing one just send me a message. I will be having an email auction and will sale to the highest bidder! My starting price is $50.

Last week in Junk Art i had my class create art out of old fruit holding cartons. The idea came to me as i was walking past a farmers market and saw these awesome fruit holders about to be thrown out. I love the wobbly shapes in the cartons and became inspired to create characters within them.

I have some exciting news. I'm a teacher! well more like an instructor for an after school program. Once a week i teach Junk Art to a class of 5 kids K-2 grade. In my class students learn about recycling and how to make art out of used plastic bottles, egg cartons, cardboard boxes and things like that. For our first class we made what i call a Nuts and Bolts Collage. The kids did such a great job on this assignment, that i thought i'd share their work with you.

Intel Illustration Gig!

About a week ago I was working at the Intel Developer Forum ( a convention where Intel shows all their new gizmos and gadgets) My Job was to brainstorm and illustrate things on these giant white boards. I was basically there to be background for the event and entertain all the computer software geniuses. When i was in High School I used to love doodling on the class white boards, so it was pretty sweet getting paid to do this.

Here's a peak at a childrens book I'm in the process of illustrating. I don't want to give to much away, But as you might guess, it involves dinosaurs! This is my first attempt at illustrating something in this diorama style. I was inspired by the work of illustrator Jean Jullien who creates amazing diorama illustrations. Oh yeah! the little guy in the diorama is a Tetrapod, one of the first land walking vertebrates.

Here are a few illustrations i worked on last summer during my internship with Pixar. One of my assignments was to show the UP filmmakers different ways that i might illustrate a children's book for the film. I was so nervous and out of my mind during these conferences, but i tried my best to keep it together. I was always afraid that i would say something stupid, so i would just sit quietly and smile : ) I have so much respect and admiration for the genius's that created this Beautiful film. Not only are they some of the most talented, hard working, intelligent people on the face of the planet, but many of them are genuinely kind, down to earth, fun people to be around.

I went Backpacking/ Camping last weekend. In Northern California there is this beautiful national forest with lots of Mountains known as Trinity Alps. I eat dehydrated food, Hiked a total of 30 miles with my group, and Relieved myself in Nature : )

My animated short Dinosaur Song was apart of the New York International Childrens Film Festival. The film screened in the Shorts for Tots category, an audience of 3 -7 year olds. There was a Q & A at the end. The Kids asked the filmmakers the cutest questions!!! A few of my favorites were "How many colors did you use in your film?" another good one was " Why are there no more dinosaurs? "

So at the moment I'm a freelance artist/ nanny. I watch a 2 & and a 6 yr old twice a week. Every morning I take the 2yr old Lily, to daycare. Recently the day care lady asked me if i'd paint something on her door. This gig was a lot of fun!!! plus it came with a free meal. The day care lady is Nicaraguan and an incredible cook. That's lily at the door, she's my buddy!!!

I didn't buy the book cause it was in pretty bad shape, but the store owner was kind enough to let me take the article. I'm sorry the articles all cropped off, my scanner is small. The paper is dated March 28, 1974, how cool is that? I think the headline says it all though.

This is a spread from Rosi Bednarik's children's book "Elefish". The book is about a young elephant who's not to happy about being on land. So then decides to live in the ocean with the fish. This book was illustrated using collage. That's my simple explanation for Bednarik's work. I think she also uses magic to make this stuff. Cause I'm definitely under a love spell with this book.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Prop 8 in California. But even more disheartening is the recently passed law in Arkansas that only allows married couples to adopt. That means gays or straight single people cannot give a child a loving home. "I just don't get it." I think America made a huge leap forward electing Barack Obama, but then took a couple of steps back with these new laws. I'm going to stop ranting now, and leave this post with a quote I find uplifting.

Lately I have been thinking deeply about what i want to do with the time I have. Like what are my dreams and stuff! Well I love making things, crafting things with my hands, Bringing thoughts to life. Artist stuff! I think its important for me to keep it vague; Because i have learned that when i say that being, " this, this, and this will make me happy." Then i start closing myself off to the many different ways that i can experience happiness. Maybe i am being dramatic, but at times it can get pretty scary thinking about all the unknowns. I guess i should just breath, take it one day at a time and listen to that little voice that tells me "everything is going to be ok."

This summer one of my dreams came true. I had the pleasure of being an art intern at Pixar. I worked in consumer products, which is the department that develops merchandise based off Pixar films. Most of my time there was spent exploring illustrative styles for children's books. I also had the opportunity to work on other fun projects like designing a t-shirt & tote bag for an event at the studio. Highlights of the internship were the people i met during my time there. Such as my mentor Ben Butcher, a generous man and passionate artist. And the other super awesome and ridiculously talented interns. I am leaving this internship with a lot of gratitude to the studio and a great amount of respect to the people who make it work. Oh yeah! did i forget to mention that i will be illustrating a childrens book of my very own for UP. Well at least that's the plan, hopefully everything works out. Yaaay!!!

Earlier this summer i worked with Jib Jab on their 2008 election short.I did a few character and environment explorations for the Obama sequence.I had a lot of fun working with Ian Worrell and Philip Vose, two of my classmates that i graduated with this year.

Wedding Gift

I don't know if you folks have noticed or not, but i have been going through a phase where all i want to make is paper-cut out crafty things. These little pieces are a gift to my brother and his wife who tied the knot over the weekend. My new sister in law comes from a Thai family who are practicing Buddhist. So in respect of her parents and also just for the sake of trying something different the wedding was held in a traditional Thai-Buddhist marriage ceremony.
Oh yeah! So the Gift is supposed to be a collection of charms that will ensure my brother and his wife have a long happy life together. For example the Snail represents Patience, which is an important characteristic to have in any relationship. The Lion is meant to remind them to not allow pride to come between them. I don't want to give all the meanings away, perhaps you can try and guess what some of the others are about?

Migrating to TV

I am so excited to announce that Functional Design my 3rd year Cal Arts film could be on TV. The other day i received a Call from
LOGO, an American digital cable television channel owned by MTV. Logo's programming is aimed at the LGBT community, so its a pretty good fit for the content of my animation. I was given an offer to sale the rights of my film to Logo so that they could air it on TV as well as other media outlets. I believe it can be expected to air sometime in August. When i learn more i will post the details.

This illustration is sort of my attempt at designing a hip, modern clothing store. I find the interior decoration of stores like Anthropology very inspiring. I think its a good thing that i am not a lady, because i would probably be very broke trying to shop for clothes at Anthropology.

Recently i was asked to design the debut CD cover for the extremely talented Jazz Musician Clinton Patterson. Last year at Cal Arts I attended a recital of Clinton's and knew that i had found the right composer for my film Functional Design.This project was really exciting to work on because it felt good to have an artist that i admire, appreciate and want to use my work.This experience also reminds me of how special the Cal Arts environment is because it encourages these kind of collaborations.

The images and stories i came across in a black & white photo book on Americas poor, inspired these character designs. It is important to remember that, we can never know what someone else has been through. many homeless people have endured through the worst of circumstances. I hope that i was able to represent the homeless as beautiful, dignified characters.

Visual development for my film. When i was younger i had a huge fascination with Dinosaurs, I think making this film will be pleasing to my inner child. The story is based off an illustrated poem that i came across over the summer. Even though i love sharing my own stories through animation, i thought it might be nice this year to focus my energy into the sound and the image (cut down on the stress).

This is something i made a few weeks ago in Mahoney's illustration class. The assignment was to create an illustration that could serve as a poster for the Circus. I really enjoy taking the opportunity to just play around with different techniques and mediums in the class. In this piece i used marker, ink, colored pencil and paper cut out.
